According to a study, you can turn surgical masks into a kind of FFP2 or N95
Researchers at the University of Wisconsin (USA) have determined that an adjuster for surgical masks improves their effectiveness to the point of equalling it to that of FFP2 or N95. So much so, according to the results of the study, that its use could be decisive in preventing the transmission of Covid-19 through aerosols.
Scientist María L. Tapia explains in a Twitter thread how to use this adjuster and how leaks are reduced during its use.
With this adjuster, according to the study, surgical masks can be converted into a kind of FFP2 or N95. And, as the researchers discovered, most have significant leaks (between 20 and 80%) when they do not fit the face. With this article, called by its creators ‘Badger seal mask filter’, it is possible to avoid the dispersion of aerosols, reducing the probability of contagion almost 400 times.
